Why we started

The QR menu became normal in 2020 and then mostly stayed bad. What restaurants were sold was usually a PDF behind a QR code: a document that pinch-zooms on a phone, is impossible to update without a designer, exists in exactly one language, and carries no allergen information at all. Meanwhile the platforms that did solve those problems charged per table, per location, or per scan — pricing that works for a hotel group and is simply out of reach for the neighbourhood restaurants that make up most of the European dining scene.

Those restaurants also carry the heaviest compliance load. A trattoria in Rome, a tasca in Lisbon and a bistrot in Lyon each face a national implementation of the same EU allergen regulation, usually written for operators with a compliance officer. And they serve the most linguistically mixed rooms in the world: a table in Barcelona in August might contain four languages and no shared one. Those are exactly the problems software is good at, and exactly the ones nobody was solving at a price these venues could pay.

So Menumigo is built the other way round. The plan that covers a single restaurant is free and stays free. Translation, allergen tagging and menu import are AI-assisted so they take minutes rather than an afternoon. And everything the guest sees is a plain web page that loads on a weak café connection on a five-year-old phone.

What we believe

The free plan is not a trial

A restaurant on the free plan keeps one venue, unlimited menu items, unlimited QR codes, multi-language menus, five AI menu imports and ten AI translations a month, and all fourteen EU allergen tags — indefinitely, with no card on file. The only difference from Pro is a small "Powered by Menumigo" credit at the foot of the menu. We would rather be the tool a small tasca can afford forever than the one it churns off after 14 days.

Guests should never download anything

A digital menu that asks a guest to install an app has already failed. Menumigo menus are ordinary web pages: the guest points a camera at the QR code and the menu opens in the browser they already have. The loyalty stamp card works the same way, on an anonymous browser device token rather than a customer account, so there is nothing to sign up for and nothing to remember.

Allergen data is a legal obligation, not a feature

In the EU, Regulation 1169/2011 makes allergen information mandatory, and each member state adds its own implementation — the French INCO décret 2015-447, Spain's Real Decreto 126/2015, Italy's D.Lgs. 231/2017, Portugal's Decreto-Lei 26/2016. Every Menumigo menu item carries item-level tagging for all fourteen mandatory allergens, in every language the menu is published in, because a translated menu with untranslated allergen data is worse than no translation at all.

The platform is readable by machines

Guests increasingly find restaurants by asking an assistant rather than by searching. Every public page on this site is published twice — as HTML and as plain Markdown at the same URL — and every restaurant menu is available as structured JSON and as schema.org Restaurant markup. There is a read-only public API and an MCP server, both unauthenticated. A menu that an assistant cannot read is a menu that will not be recommended.

How we operate

Menumigo is an independent software product, not a reseller or a white label of someone else's platform. Support runs by email at contact@menumigo.com and through the live chat on this site — see the contact page for response times and what to include. Authentication is handled by Clerk and payments by Polar, so Menumigo never stores card details. Menu data and analytics are hosted in the EU, every connection is HTTPS, and guest analytics are aggregate — scan counts, item views, peak hours, coarse geography — never tied to an identifiable person. We also publish the platform in machine-readable form so assistants and integrators can work with it directly: a read-only JSON API, an MCP server, an OpenAPI specification, and a Markdown copy of every page on this site. All of it is documented on the developer portal, and none of it needs an API key.
