# 130 Food Truck Name Ideas, and How to Pick One That Reads From Across the Street

> 130 food truck name ideas for tacos, burgers, coffee, BBQ, vegan and Asian street food, plus how to test a name on a moving truck and check it's free.

Written by The Menumigo Team · Updated 2026-10-14 · 13 min read

**Short answer:** A good food truck name is two or three short words that say what you cook and can be read on the side of the truck from 10 metres away, across a car park or a festival field. It needs a short social handle you can tag in every "here's where we are today" post, and it has to be free as a trademark, business name, domain and handle. Below are 130 ideas sorted by cuisine and style, a test for how a name reads on a vehicle, and the checks to run before you pay for the wrap.

**Key takeaways**

- Put the food in the name, or in a line right under it. People choose a truck from a distance, and a vague name makes them walk over and read the menu before they know whether they want it.
- Test the name at full size from 10 metres before you order the wrap. Long names and script fonts are the first to fail.
- Keep the handle short and the same everywhere. X allows at most 15 characters, so a handle within that limit fits X and is easy to type into a tag.
- Ask the authority that issues your permit what the vehicle has to display. California, for example, requires the business name in letters at least 3 inches high.
- These ideas are starting points. Any of them may already be trading, so search trademarks, business registers, domains, handles and Google Maps in every town on your route.

## How to name a food truck in 8 steps

1. **Start with the food and the format.** "Birria tacos at weekday lunch spots and weekend markets" leads to different names than "espresso and pastries from a converted horsebox at weddings".
2. **List 20 words.** Use the dish, the cooking method (griddle, smoker, wok), parts of the truck (hatch, axle, wheel, kerb), your town or the roads you drive, and any nickname the crew already uses.
3. **Mix them using the formulas further down**, aiming for 30 to 40 candidates.
4. **Cut anything over three words**, anything you'd need to spell out over the noise of a generator, and anything close to a truck or restaurant you know.
5. **Do the shout test.** Call each name across a car park to a friend and ask them to search for it on Instagram. If they can't find it from hearing it once, customers will struggle too.
6. **Check the handle** on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and X before you fall for a name.
7. **Run the availability checks**: trademarks, business register, domain and Google Maps in each town where you trade.
8. **Mock up the final three** on a photo of your truck at real size, then look at them from 10 metres and as a 100-pixel profile picture.

68. Wok Window
69. Gyoza Garage

106. Thai Tanic

**About pun names:** a good pun gets a smile and a photo, which helps at a busy market. Puns are also popular, so expect to find several of these already trading when you search, which makes them harder to register. A pun that plays on a film, song or TV title can draw a complaint from whoever owns it. And a pun only works for people who hear it, so test it on the customers you expect.

### Location and route food truck names

107. Route 9 Kitchen (use your own road)
108. Harbour Lot Eats
109. Market Day Kitchen
110. Twelve Thirty
111. Crossroads Kitchen
112. Ring Road Grill
113. Riverside Hatch
114. Last Stop Kitchen
115. Lot 14
116. Park & Eat
117. Mile Marker Eats
118. Lunch Shift

A place name works if you trade in the same area every week. If the truck moves between towns, a name tied to one of them can make people elsewhere think you're a visitor.

### Short and minimal food truck names

119. Hatch Kitchen
120. Kerb Food Co.
121. Axle
122. Spoke Kitchen
123. Halt
124. Tin Plate
125. The Window
126. Plate
127. Wheelhouse
128. Grill Van
129. Ladle
130. Crate

A one-word name leaves the truck to say what you sell. "Axle" works if the panel below it says "Smash burgers" in letters almost as big.

## Will the name read on the truck?

A shopfront sign stays in one place and people walk up to it. A truck is seen side-on, from a distance, sometimes parked in a row of other trucks and sometimes moving through traffic. That changes what a good name looks like.

- Keep it short. Two or three short words fill the panel with big letters, while a five-word name has to shrink to fit.
- Say the food. If the name doesn't say tacos, a line underneath should: "Comal & Co. / Tacos and quesadillas".
- Use plain, heavy letters. Thin script, handwriting fonts and outline lettering blur at a distance. Pick a heavy typeface in a colour that contrasts with the wrap.
- Repeat the name where people look: both sides, above the serving hatch, on the menu board, and on the back, where drivers sit behind you in traffic.
- Plan around the openings. The hatch, vents, doors and fridge grilles cut across the panel, so lay the name out on a photo of your truck before the designer starts, not on a blank rectangle.

The 10-metre test: print the name at the size it will have on the truck, tape it to a parked car or a wall, walk 10 metres away and look for a second. If you have to stop and read, so will your customers. If you trade in the evening, repeat it at dusk.

## A handle you can post every day

If you announce your location every day, the handle goes into every one of those posts: "@spokekitchen is at Riverside Lot today, 11:30 to 14:30". Customers tag you, repost you and type your name into search, so the handle needs to be short and obvious.

- X usernames can be at most 15 characters, using letters, numbers and underscores. Staying within that limit, with letters and numbers only, gives you a handle you can try to claim on every platform.
- Use the same handle everywhere, so a customer who finds you on one app can find you on the next.
- If the exact name is taken, add the food or the town (@spoketacos, @spokeleeds) rather than numbers or extra underscores, which are hard to say out loud.
- Put the cuisine in the profile name and bio, so the account makes sense to someone who has never seen the truck.

For the wording of the daily posts themselves, see our [restaurant social media captions](/guides/restaurant-social-media-captions).

## Permits and the name on your vehicle

Rules for selling food from a vehicle differ by country, city and sometimes street, and they change. Before you order the wrap, ask whoever issues your permit what the vehicle must show. Three examples:

- California requires a mobile food facility to show its business name, city, state, ZIP code and the permit holder's name (if different) on the side customers use. The name must be in letters at least 3 inches (about 7.6 cm) high, in a colour that contrasts with the background, and motorised units must show it on two sides (Health and Safety Code section 114299).
- In England and Wales, you may need a street trading licence, and you get it from the council for the area where you want to trade.
- In the US, if you trade under a name that isn't your legal business name, you may need to register it as a DBA ("doing business as") with your state, county or city.

Elsewhere, start with the town hall or council that licenses street trading, and ask before you design anything.

## Food truck name formulas

| Formula | Pattern | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Dish + vehicle | [Dish] + Bus, Wagon or Truck | Brisket Bus, Waffle Wagon |
| Dish + road | [Dish] + Lane, Road or Route | Tortilla Lane, Roti Road |
| Tool & second word | [Cooking tool] & [word] | Comal & Co., Griddle & Go |
| Truck part | Hatch, Axle, Spoke or Kerb + food word | Green Hatch, Espresso Axle |
| Place | [Road, lot or market] + Kitchen or Eats | Route 9 Kitchen, Harbour Lot Eats |
| Time | A time of day or a shift | Twelve Thirty, Late Night Tortilla |
| Pun | A familiar phrase with the food swapped in | Bun Voyage, Brisket Case |

## Checks before you commit

Run all of these on your final three names.

### 1. Trademarks

Search for identical and similar names. In the Nice classification that trademark offices use, class 43 covers restaurant, take-away and catering services, and class 30 lists foods such as tacos, pizzas, sandwiches and coffee.

| Market | Where to search |
|---|---|
| USA | USPTO trademark search |
| United Kingdom | UK IPO trade mark search |
| European Union | EUIPO eSearch plus for EU trade marks, and TMview for national marks across many offices |
| Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Turkey | OEPM, INPI Portugal, INPI France, UIBM, TÜRKPATENT |

A trademark lawyer can confirm the risk before you pay for a wrap.

### 2. Business name registration

Check your company register for businesses with the same name. In the US, the SBA notes that a DBA may need registering with your state, county or city.

### 3. Domain

Check the .com and your country domain. A domain that matches your handle makes the truck easier to find from a photo of the wrap.

### 4. Social handles

Search for the handle on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and X. Claim it on all of them the day you decide, even the ones you won't use yet.

### 5. Google Maps in every town on your route

Search the name in each town where you plan to trade. If you list the truck on Google, the Business Profile rules say the name must match your real-world name and can't carry extra keywords, so "Comal & Co. Best Tacos Downtown" won't pass.

### 6. Pronunciation

Do the shout test with people who speak your customers' main languages. A name that is easy to say in English may be awkward in Spanish, Portuguese or Turkish.

### 7. The 10-metre and avatar test

Look at the name on a mock-up of the truck from 10 metres, and as a 100-pixel profile picture. It has to pass both.

## How Menumigo fits

A truck's menu can change more often than a restaurant's: a dish sells out at the second stop, a festival needs its own prices, a special runs for one weekend.

- A QR code on the truck window or menu board opens your current menu and prices. The code doesn't change when you edit the menu, so you print it once.
- Edit items and prices from your phone between stops, and hide a dish when it sells out.
- Tag every item with any of the 14 EU allergens, so guests in the queue can check before they reach the hatch.
- Use the same menu link in your Instagram bio, so the location post and the QR code show the same menu.
- Import the menu you already have from a photo or a PDF.
- The free plan has no time limit and needs no card: one venue, unlimited menu items, one menu QR code, menus in two languages, 5 AI menu imports and 10 AI translations a month, logo and banner. Every new restaurant gets 7 days of Pro first. Pro costs €19 a month or €180 a year and includes one venue; each extra truck is €9 a month or €72 a year (October 2026).
- Menumigo only shows the menu. It doesn't take orders or payments and has no POS integration, so ordering and payment stay at the hatch.

## FAQ

### What makes a good food truck name?

A good food truck name is two or three short words, says what you cook, and can be read from 10 metres on the side of the truck. It also has to be free as a trademark, business name, domain and social handle. Examples: "Comal & Co." for tacos, "Brisket Bus" for barbecue, "Espresso Axle" for a coffee truck.

### How do I come up with a unique food truck name?

List 20 words linked to your food, your cooking method, the truck itself and the places you trade. Combine them with formulas like "dish + vehicle", "dish + road" or "truck part + food word". Then search trademark registers, business registers, domains, handles and Google Maps to make sure nobody nearby uses it.

### Should a food truck name say what food you sell?

Yes, or the line printed under it should. People pick a truck from a distance, often between several others, and a name that doesn't hint at the food makes them walk over to read the menu first. "Axle" alone could be anything; "Axle / Smash burgers" is clear.

### How do I check if a food truck name is already taken?

Search the USPTO (US), the UK IPO, or EUIPO and TMview (EU) for similar names in class 43, which covers restaurant and catering services. Then check your company register, domain availability, Instagram, TikTok and X handles, and Google Maps in every town on your route.

### Does my food truck name have to be displayed on the truck?

It depends on where you trade. California, for example, requires the business name in letters at least 3 inches high on the customer side, and on two sides of a motorised truck. Ask the authority that issues your permit before you design the wrap.

### Are pun names a good idea for a food truck?

Puns are memorable and suit a casual truck, but many are already in use, which makes them hard to register and easy to confuse. A pun on a film or song title can also draw a complaint. Test it on the customers you expect: a joke only works if they hear it.
